Procedure for hypothesis testing

In this tutorial, we will discuss Procedure for hypothesis testing in research.

Key Points:

1. Set up Null and Alternate Hypothesis.

2. Selecting a Level of significance or Alpha (α) level.

3. Collect Data.

4. Decide which statistical test to use.

5. Calculate the test statistical value.

6. Find out the Critical value of test.

7. Draw conclusion.

Procedure for hypothesis testing

There are 7 main steps in Hypothesis Testing:

1. Set up Null and Alternate Hypothesis.

✰ The null and alternate hypothesis is stated here. They are stated in such a way that they are mutual exclusive i.e. if one is true, other must be false.

2. Selecting a Level of significance or Alpha (α) level.

✰ Set significance level either 1%, 5% or 10%. If type I error or level of significance is fixed at 5%, it means that there are about 5 chances in 100 that we will reject H0 when H0 is true.

3.Collect Data.

✰ Collect relevant data from the specified sample.

Click here to see details about How to collect Data.

4. Decide which statistical test to use.

✰ There is two statistical tests:
1) one is a parametric test and
2) Another one is a non-parametric test.
Decide which one we want to choose to test Null Hypothesis. If we know population parameter, then parametric test is used, otherwise non parametric test is used.

Click here to see details about parametric and non parametric test

5. Calculate the test statistical value.

✰ In step 4, we select a statistical test to test Null hypothesis. Suppose if we select z-test, then calculate the test statistical value using the formula given in z-test.

6. Find out the Critical value of test.

✰ Critical value is the cut-off value which is to be compared with the statistical test value to take a decision about the null hypothesis.

✰ It divides the graph into two sections: The acceptance region and the Rejection region.

✰ If the test value falls into the rejection region, then reject the Null Hypothesis.

✰ So, Using the test statistical, significance level (alpha), and type of test, obtain the critical (or table) value.

✰ The table / critical value of the 5% significance level is 1.96.

7. Draw conclusion.

✰ If statistical test value < critical value = accept null Hypothesis
✰ If statistical test value > critical value = reject null Hypothesis
